“My results are beautiful and recovery was remarkably quick. My only regret is that I did not do it sooner.” – P.F. Columbia, South Carolina
Liposuction Surgery Overview
Liposuction is a procedure that removes fat deposits from under the skin using a long stainless steel tube with the aid of a vacuum. Liposuction reshapes specific parts of the body in order to achieve improved contours and an enhanced self-image. In the article titled, “The Myth: I Exercise Therefore I Don’t Need Liposuction” Dr. Ditesheim explains how fat deposits can be resistant to both diet and exercise.
Liposuction Following Post Massive Weight Loss
Many patients have a difficult time losing weight through exercise and a healthy diet. Despite all of the effort, you continue to carry excess weight that can become life-threatening. For some of you, weight loss surgery is the right choice toward a healthy lifestyle. Following weight loss surgery, most patients have loose-hanging skin throughout their bodies. Dr. Ditesheim will work with you to deliver the maximum benefit and help you to achieve your goals with massive weight loss. It is important that we make you look as good as you feel following such a dramatic change.
Many people who have lost 80+ pounds are more physically healthy, but they may still suffer from low self-esteem because of the loose and saggy skin that remains after the weight loss. They are extremely motivated to look good and feel good, and for them the benefits of plastic surgery are remarkable.
Dr. Ditesheim’s Approach to Liposuction
Dr. Ditesheim performs the Power Assisted Liposuction PAL, whereby a small wand-like device, called a “cannula”, is inserted through small incisions in the skin. During the power-assisted liposuction procedure, the vibrating cannula allows for easier removal of fat deposits without much mechanical work by the surgeon, giving him greater ability to focus on the patient’s goals. Once the incisions have been made, a sterile liquid solution is inserted in order to reduce bleeding. Next, the cannula is guided through the incisions and around the targeted area in order to break up and remove fat cells and deposits. Finally, a vacuum is used to remove the dislocated fat. The power-assisted liposuction allows for smaller incisions because there is a wider variety of cannula sizes available, compared with more traditional liposuction procedures. This is especially important because the outcome usually results in less scarring, swelling & bruising.
Liposuction Pre-Operative Overview
Dr. Ditesheim and his experienced staff will provide you with pre-surgical information that includes guidelines about drinking, smoking and avoiding certain vitamins and medications. Dr. Ditesheim’s caring staff has a wealth of experience in preparing patients and their families for the recovery process and ensuring a predictably smooth process.
Liposuction Recovery
Once the surgery is complete you will be placed in a compression garment in order to reduce swelling and to ensure optimal results for your newly contoured areas. Most women report soreness in the treated areas for about 48 hours, but the pain is usually mild. Dr. Ditesheim will prescribe medications for pain management to aid in any discomfort. Bruising should subside within a couple weeks, but may take longer depending upon how you heal. One of the most favorable benefits of liposuction is the recovery time. Most of our patients return to work after three or four days of rest and relaxation. Although, we suggest that vigorous activity should be avoided for a few weeks. Our experienced staff will provide you with postoperative guidelines that provide instructions for the most comfortable and successful healing.
Many patients who have expressed a desire for a more contoured appearance also inquire about a tummy tuck. It is very common for women to have the two procedures done together in order to achieve the most ideal results. Dr. Ditesheim will recommend the appropriate procedure once you have discussed your desired outcome. During your consultation with Dr. Ditesheim, he will review the best treatment options for your personal goals and which technique and procedure will achieve the greatest results.
