Choosing Breast Implants
Want to know a secret about choosing breast implants? It’s not really about the implants. What is most important is achieving the look that’s just right for you. What breast size brings your proportions into better balance? What shape looks and feels the most natural given your unique anatomy? And most important, what will make you smile when you look in the mirror?
We’ll work together to choose the breast implants that will best achieve your look
Dr. Ditesheim works with all three manufacturers of FDA-approved breast implants in the U.S: Mentor, Allergan and Sientra. Each company offers literally hundreds of choices for breast implants. This is good news, as it allows us to meet the needs of virtually any patient.
Dr. Ditesheim and our staff will help you understand your different options, making suggestions based on your anatomy and personal preferences, at your personal consultation. You’ll also get to try on your top choices, so you can compare them on your own body. To help you get started, here’s a rundown of what we discuss with patients looking for breast augmentation:
What Type? Saline, Silicone Gel, or “Gummy Bear” Shaped Silicone
There’s plenty of chatter about what type is best, but the answer is, all of the above. Each implant type has its advantages; what it boils down to is what look and feel you’ll be happiest with.
Saline Implants: a Cost-Effective Choice for Precise Symmetry
Saline implants have a silicone outer shell, which Dr. Ditesheim fills with a precise amount of sterile saline solution, making it possible to achieve very close symmetry. They tend to have a firmer feel than silicone gel, and may be more prone to visible rippling in patients with little existing breast tissue. However, for the right patient, saline implants can be a cost-effective choice and provide a beautiful, natural result.
Before & After Breast Augmentation with Saline Implants
Silicone Gel: soft, durable and natural feel
Silicone gel has increasingly become the more popular option since their re-approval by the FDA in 2006. They come pre-filled with a soft, yet cohesive silicone gel that feels the most natural.
Before & After Breast Augmentation with Silicone Gel Implants
Shaped Silicone: form-stable for a breast that holds it’s shape
Sometimes called “gummy bear” implants for their consistency, these shaped implants contain a highly-cohesive silicone gel that holds its shape in any position. These can be an excellent option for women who want a more naturally sloping breast shape. Because of their slightly firmer filling, these implants must be placed through an inframammary incision (under the breast crease), so keep that in mind.
What Size? What You Need to Know First
Did you know that breast implant sizes have almost nothing to do with bra cup sizes? Breast implants are sized in terms of volume, or how many “cc’s” of filling are contained in them. Each style of implant has sizes ranging from approximately 150cc to 750cc or more. The breast implant works together with your own breast tissue to create your new breast size.
Rather than focus on numbers, such as what cup size you want to be, we find the patients are happiest with their results when we focus on the overall aesthetic. What do your breasts need to achieve the proportion, shape and fullness that looks like you? Only in answering these questions does implant size come into play. Quite often, patients need two different sized implants to achieve the closest symmetry.
It’s also important to consider your lifestyle. Are you a competitive tennis player or marathon runner? You may be happier going with more modest size implants that still achieve your desired results.
What Shape? Round or Anatomically Shaped
Again, this is a choice we’ll help you make based on your personal tastes and natural breast contour. In general, round implants help to create a fuller upper pole, or upper portion of the breast. Shaped implants are designed to give the breast a gently sloping upper pole, similar to that of a natural mature breast.
However, this isn’t a hard and fast rule. When performed by an experienced plastic surgeon, breast augmentation with round implants can achieve a very natural look and feel. At your consultation, Dr. Ditesheim will explain how each shape option might look on you, and make suggestions based on what will best achieve what you have in mind.
What Profile? That Depends on Everything Else
Implant profile is a measure how far the implant projects forward in relation to its base width, (think the part that sits on the chest wall). You’ll see it expressed in terms like low, moderate, moderate plus, and high. But it’s not a choice you can make independent of other options.
The right profile for you will depend on your chest width and existing breast “footprint” as well as your desired size increase. Your implants need to have a base width that fits your natural breasts at the chest wall. This is what helps Dr. Ditesheim create the right amount of cleavage, and ensures your breasts have a natural shape after augmentation. If you have a narrow chest width & natural breast base, you will need implants with a narrower base width too. As a result, you will probably need a higher profile implant to achieve the size increase you are looking for.
On the other end of the spectrum, if you are broad-chested, implants with a larger base width may be more appropriate. To augment to the right size, a lower profile implant will suffice, as you will be able to achieve your desired increase without the extra projection.
