Introduction to Fat Grafting
Some of us spend a majority of our childhood trying to lose “baby fat”. By the time we reach our early thirties, most of us have lost the baby fat in our faces. Unfortunately, it is the baby fat in our faces that helps us to maintain a youthful round face. Have you ever noticed that as you age your face goes through transitions and may seem to take on different shape? One of the first signs of aging involves fat shifting or a loss of fat causing a gaunt appearance. Fat injections are a minimally invasive way to regain that fresh youthful appearance.
Is Fat Grafting Right for Me?
- You are bothered by the loss of volume and by the changing shape of your face.
- You are bothered by the appearance of a bottom heavy or jowly face.
- You are bothered by the appearance of an asymmetrical face.
- You are bothered by the appearance of a thin or gaunt face.
- You are in good physical health and have realistic expectations.
- You are a non-smoker or plan to quit smoking well in advance of the scheduled procedure.
Fat Grafting Overview
Fat Grafting is effective for filling deep facial lines, nasolabial folds (the area from the nose and down around the mouth) and sunken eyes. Research has shown that liposuctioned fat is rich with stem cells. These cells can actually repair problems with skin pigmentation, wrinkles, loss of facial volume and other effects of aging. Fat grafting lasts longer than most fillers because it uses your own cells. While some reabsorption is possible, the results are immediate and beautiful.
Dr. Ditesheim’s Approach to Fat Grafting
Dr. Ditesheim has a deep understanding of facial structures to create the proper proportions for fat injections. During the procedure, the fat is extracted from the hips, thighs, or buttocks and processed to separate the blood and fat. After the fat has been purified, it is injected deep within the facial structures to create a natural fresh look. Dr. Ditesheim makes every effort to bring that youthful appearance back to the surface. He wants you to feel empowered and to share that empowerment with the world!
Fat Grafting Pre-Operative Overview
Dr. Ditesheim and his experienced staff will provide you with pre-surgical information that includes guidelines about drinking, smoking and avoiding certain vitamins and medications. Dr. Ditesheim’s caring staff has a wealth of experience in preparing patients and families for the recovery process and ensuring a predictable, smooth process.
Fat Grafting Surgery
The surgery time may range between 30 minutes to 1 1/2 hours depending upon the area of the face being treated. The procedure is usually done as an outpatient, under a general anesthetic in our own AAASF(American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities) accredited surgical suite. Our surgical facilities are built and run by strict standards, to ensure the highest level of safety and comfort.
Fat Grafting Recovery
One of the most appealing aspects of fat grafting is the quick recovery time. Most people can return to work within the next two to four days. Ice compresses should be applied for the first 24-48 hours following the surgery to minimize swelling and bruising. Throughout the first few months following the procedure your body may absorb some of the fat. However, Dr. Ditesheim’s technique allows for minimal reabsorption.
