Reshaping the Nose with Rhinoplasty
A beautifully shaped, proportional nose rarely gets noticed, but it can make all the difference in bringing out your natural beauty. How? By helping to achieve facial harmony.
When your facial features are in balance and complement one another, that is facial harmony. Nasal surgery, or rhinoplasty, is one of the most common procedures performed to achieve facial harmony, and when approached with a personalized vision and current techniques, rhinoplasty offers highly satisfying results.

Computer Morphing Lets You Preview Your New Look
What if you’re not sure exactly how to describe what you want your nose to look like? If you’re like many of our patients, you’d know it when you see it. During your consultation, Dr. Ditesheim will take digital photos of your profile, “morphing” your nose on the screen based on your desired changes. Our patients have found this incredibly helpful, as they can feel confident about what surgery can achieve for them.
What changes to my nose can I make with rhinoplasty?
Nose reshaping is a highly individualized surgery, and can work to make a number of different changes. Dr. Ditesheim will listen carefully to your concerns and explain what different approaches can achieve for you. Rhinoplasty can achieve excellent results for the following:
- Bringing the nose into better proportion with the rest of the face
- Straightening a prominent bump or crooked nasal tip
- Reducing or improving the shape of the nasal tip
- Improving symmetry following injury
- Improving the results of a previous rhinoplasty with another surgeon
These are just a few of the common goals we help patients achieve; if you are unhappy with your nose for another reason, we can help you learn about your options to make the changes you want.

Rhinoplasty Surgery Techniques Explained
A rhinoplasty is a cosmetic procedure designed to improve the function and appearance of a person’s nose. Dr. Ditesheim’s modern approach to nasal surgery incorporates advanced techniques based upon two principles:
1. Adding tissue, such as a cartilage graft, can often improve contour and breathing.
Grafting techniques can be more effective and appear more natural than removing tissue alone. It is sometimes more predictable, for example, to improve the profile by building up a low nasal bridge rather than trying to reduce the forward projection of the nasal tip.
Conversely, in patients where the forward projection of the tip is inadequate, adding cartilage will yield a more natural profile than trying to reduce the bridge. Most rhinoplasty procedures today entail a combination of tissue removal and tissue addition in order to produce the best result.
2. An “open” rhinoplasty method allows a surgeon to make highly detailed changes.
A small incision is placed in the skin under the nose between the nostrils, allowing the plastic surgeon to “open” the nose and view its entire internal structure. This allows for great precision in making internal changes, which affect external appearance. Patients who have had previous nasal surgery with a poor result usually require both cartilage grafts and an “open” rhinoplasty in order to correct the deformities.

Rhinoplasty surgery details
Nasal procedures are tailored to the individual facial structures and your personal goals. This creates differences in rhinoplasty surgery times to range from 2 to 5 hours. The cosmetic surgery procedure is usually done on an outpatient basis, with the patient under general anesthesia administered by a board-certified physician anesthesiologist to ensure the highest level of safety.
Your procedure will be performed in our on-site AAAASF (American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities) accredited surgical suite for your comfort and privacy.
Your recovery from rhinoplasty
Once your rhinoplasty surgery is complete, your nose will be bandaged and splinted in order to minimize swelling and bruising. The dressing may include nasal packing, which should be removed within a couple of days. All sutures and/or staples, splints, and bandages are usually removed within five to ten days.
During the first twenty-four hours following your surgery, your face will be puffy and may feel sore. You may notice increased swelling and bruising over the next few days following your procedure; this is normal. Applying cold compresses will help reduce swelling and help keep you comfortable.
Most of the swelling and bruising should subside within 2 to 3 weeks. There may be slight swelling for months to follow, but it will only be noticeable by you and Dr. Ditesheim. Our office will schedule frequent follow-up visits in the months following your procedure to check on your healing progress. They’re great at providing emotional support to help you throughout your cosmetic surgery experience.
