Introduction to Gynecomastia
![]()
Male breast enlargement is a very common condition in men. Approximately one out of every three men will be diagnosed with Gynecomastia in their lifetime. It can result in embarrassment causing some to try to hide the condition with shirts or avoid certain activities. It can be difficult going to the beach even with family and friends or just enjoying a relaxing day by the pool. Imagine freeing yourself from living in fear. Start enjoying life and the fun in it without having to disguise your breasts.
Is Gynecomastia Surgery Right for Me?
- You are bothered by the appearance of large breasts.
- Your breast development has subsided.
- You are in good physical health and have realistic expectations.
- You are a non-smoker or plan to quit smoking well in advance of the scheduled procedure.

Gynecomastia Surgery Overview
Gynecomastia is the appearance of male breast development. Often it is noticed as fullness under the nipple area on one or both sides of the chest. This is most commonly due to a combination of excess fatty tissue and breast tissue. Historically, excess fullness was removed through a large incision around the nipple. Today, most of the fatty tissue and sometimes the fibrous or breast-like tissue can be removed with liposuction or ultrasonic liposuction. Occasionally a small incision around the areola or nipple area is needed to remove very firm or scar-like tissue. Every attempt is made to achieve symmetry in both sides of the chest.
Dr. Ditesheim’s Approach to Gynecomastia Surgery
Dr. Ditesheim can understand and identify with the needs of his male patients. He has performed male breast reduction for years on men of diverse backgrounds. Most recently, Dr. Ditesheim has performed gynecomastia surgery on Micah. Micah had been concerned with his physical appearance for a number of years. Micah explained to Dr. Ditesheim that he was about to get married and wanted to finally free himself of this anxiety he had been carrying around for far too long. The surgery was completed a couple of months before Micah’s wedding, and Dr. Ditesheim and staff were elated to receive a photograph of Micah (shirtless!) beaming with confidence on the beach in Hawaii with his bride during their honeymoon.
Gynecomastia Pre-Operative Overview
Dr. Ditesheim and his experienced staff will provide you with pre-surgical information that includes guidelines about drinking, smoking and avoiding certain vitamins and medications. During the pre-op appointment you may want to ask the Dr. and staff about how to prepare your family for your recovery. Dr. Ditesheim’s caring staff has a wealth of experience in preparing patients and their families for the recovery process and ensuring a predictable, smooth process.
Gynecomastia Surgery
The surgery takes approximately 1-3 hours. Gynecomastia is usually done as an outpatient, under general anesthesia administered by a physician anesthesiologist to minimize discomfort during the procedure. The procedure may be performed in a partner hospital near the office if you wish. We understand that it is important for you to have options. We have our own AAASF (American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities) accredited surgical suite. Our surgical facilities are built and run by strict standards, to ensure the highest level of safety and comfort.
Gynecomastia Surgery Recovery
Following the procedure, the sculpted areas of the chest will be swollen and sore. In most cases, a compression vest is worn by the patient and fitted in our office to help quell bruising, swelling and overall discomfort. The swelling will decrease, but may take up to six months for the swelling to completely subside. Most patients are able to return to work and resume normal activities within a week after the surgery.
