Male Breast Reduction (gynecomastia) Learning Center

The male chest is one that defines a fit, firm and masculine appearance. For some men, the excess male breast tissue (gynecomastia) can be an embarrassing and difficult condition to accept. Hiding behind baggy shirts is not a lifetime solution. Dr. Ditesheim understands how men feel about their bodies, and the special concerns they have for approaching cosmetic surgical solutions. Whether through liposuction alone or with additional cosmetic surgery techniques, we can help you achieve a masculine, firm, fit chest and restore confidence in your body-image.

Localized fat or excess glandular tissue in one or both breasts can give the appearance of breasts on the male body. A male breast reduction removes excess fat and tissue restoring the chest to a normal size and projection.

What can a male breast reduction treat?

A male breast reduction can address such issues as:
• Breast tissue and fat deposits on the male chest that are disproportionately large and noticeable
• Development of fat deposits or breast issue on one side of the male chest
• Dissatisfaction or self-consciousness about the appearance of your chest

Is male breast reduction surgery right for me?

A male breast reduction is a highly individualized cosmetic surgery and you should do it for yourself, not to fulfill someone else's desires or to try to fit any sort of ideal image. A male breast reduction may be a good option for you if:
• You are over 18 years old and are male
• You are at or near your ideal weight
• You have a positive outlook and realistic expectations
• You are physically healthy
• You do not smoke

Gynecomastia Pre-Operative Overview

Dr. Ditesheim and his experienced staff will provide you with pre-surgical information that includes guidelines about drinking, smoking and avoiding certain vitamins and medications. During the pre-op appointment you may want to ask Dr. Ditesheim and his staff about how to prepare your family for your recovery. Dr. Ditesheim’s caring staff has a wealth of experience in preparing patients and their families for the cosmetic surgery recovery process and ensuring a predictable, smooth process.

Gynecomastia Surgery

The gynecomastia surgery takes approximately 1-3 hours. Gynecomastia surgery is usually done as an outpatient, under general anesthesia administered by a physician anesthesiologist to minimize discomfort during the procedure. The gynecomastia procedure may be performed in a partner hospital near Ditesheim Cosmetic Surgery if you wish. We understand that it is important for you to have options. We have our own AAASF (American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities) accredited surgical suite. Our surgical facilities are built and run by strict standards, to ensure the highest level of safety and comfort.

Gynecomastia Surgery Recovery

Following the gynecomastia cosmetic surgery procedure, the sculpted areas of the chest will be swollen and sore. In most cases, a compression vest is worn by the patient and fitted in our office to help quell bruising, swelling and overall discomfort. The swelling will decrease, but may take up to six months for the swelling to completely subside. Most patients are able to return to work and resume normal activities within a week after the gynecomastia surgery.
