A partial reduction in male breast size may be possible with hormone therapy. Various types of hormone treatments have been used with some success in patients with gynecomastia related to hormone imbalance. Clomiphene is an anti-estrogen that may be prescribed to try to resolve hormone imbalance. Other patients may be prescribed Tamoxifen, or raloxifene as off-label treatments for gynecomastia some physicians consider appropriate for certain cases.

Low Testosterone and Aging

It is normal for testosterone levels to reduce as men get older. It is estimated that one in four men over 45 years of age have low testosterone. The effects of low testosterone go beyond developing excess breast tissue and can significant impact overall quality of life. Issues such as lack of libido, low sperm count, and erectile dysfunction are also associated with low testosterone. While aging is the most common reason for low testosterone, other factors can contribute to reduced levels of this critical male hormone:

  • Accident, trauma to the testes where testosterone is produced
  • Swelling and inflammation in the testes
  • Testicular cancer, cancer treatments
  • The use of anabolic steroids

It is unfortunate, but any medication has potential side effects. It is important that you fully understand the risks of taking hormones of any type.

Adolescent Men and Gynecomastia

Natural hormonal changes in adolescents can lead to gynecomastia, which typically reduce after six months to a year – but not in every case. Men, both young and older, are very unhappy with enlarged breasts.

Young men are often the target of unkind comments, making matters worse. If you or your son have this condition, we urge you to visit with Dr. Ditesheim to evaluate the condition and advise you about the various treatments available. Treating gynecomastia successfully can be a life-changing improvement.

Why Surgery or Liposuction Rather than Hormones?

While having balanced hormones is important, synthetic hormones have side effects. If you have low testosterone, diet and changing medications may be the first step – rather than adding another medication. Hormones can produce some negative effects on the body, including the risk of reduced bone density or osteoporosis.

For many men, the simplest, most effective treatment is advance liposuction, where the excess fat is gently extracted. Rather than treating the entire body system, this solution handles the problem directly.

Causes of Gynecomastia

There are many causes of gynecomastia, but one of the most common (affecting 20 percent of men) is related to the use of medications or herbal supplements that affect hormone production. Certain types of oils used in shampoos and creams can also lead to an imbalance, including tea tree oil and lavender, common ingredients in what are believed to be “healthy” products. Other causes of gynecomastia include:

  • Hormone imbalance
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Radiation treatment
  • Chemotherapy
  • Excess body fat
  • Medications (anabolic steroids, some antibiotics, some anti-anxiety and antidepressants, some heart drugs, some anti-androgens)
  • High sugar diet
