Choosing Your Breast Implants

Breast size and shape are important, so be honest and open about your expectations when talking with Dr. Ditesheim. The goal isn’t to try to achieve an exact “cup size.” More important is creating the best aesthetic shape, taking into consideration chest dimensions as well as overall height and weight.

Dr. Ditesheim believes that each woman knows what is “right” for her body and he has developed a sizing process that enables you to see and feel different implant choices in a bra, in clothes, and in bathing suits, so you are confident about the size of your augmentation.

I am more satisfied that I ever imagined and by the way, my husband is too.

My breasts have just enough sag to command attention. They are sooooooo awesome in a bikini - but because of the sag, they look super natural.

Your Breast Sizing Session

Breast implant type and size will be determined by your aesthetic goals, breast anatomy, skin elasticity, and body type.

Here’s how our sizing process works:

  • We’ll go over your options: silicone vs. saline, shaped vs. round, size and profile, paying attention to your personal preferences about all of these choices.
  • You’ll get time to try on implants to find the “custom-fit” that best complements your body shape, your chest, and your idea of what looks great on you.
  • You will be able to “feel” the shape of your new breast size and even see what you look like in tops or camisoles.

Only you know when you’ve found just the right look—our sizing process makes that possible!

We feel that our sizing process provides you with an accurate way to gauge the results of your Charlotte breast augmentation. After surgery, our patients routinely report that their “size was just right,” “the size was perfect,” and most powerfully, “this is me!”

  • We are always readily available and approachable to address any questions or concerns you may have.
  • Our commitment to patient safety is a top priority. All general anesthesia for our patients is administered by a board certified anesthesiologist; that is a medical doctor specializing in general anesthesia care, as opposed to a nurse.

About breast augmentation surgery

Breast augmentation is an outpatient procedure, typically performed in our on-site AAAASF fully-accredited surgical suite. Your entire surgery experience will take several hours, including time to relax before your procedure, about 1 hour for the surgery itself, and 30–40 minutes of post-procedure recovery.

After your breast augmentation procedure, your recovery is an important part of the final outcome. We take special care of our patients in the following ways:

  • We check in with them by phone the night of the surgery
  • Dr. Ditesheim personally sees all patients the morning following surgery
  • All patients have Dr. Ditesheim’s cell phone number and our nurse has a special cell phone for surgery patients in case of emergency

Your recovery process

After your procedure, you will likely sleep for a few hours at home and then have a light meal. Some women will be pain free and drive themselves to the office the next day, others with more muscle work may have more soreness, or pressure type discomfort for 3-5 days. In addition, we have a complete pain management program in place to ensure a more comfortable recovery process.

Our personalized recovery program helps you enjoy your new look quickly—and for years to come!

Dr. Ditesheim will provide you with a prescription for pain medication to ease any discomfort following surgery. He encourages early movement and activity as soon as possible, beginning the next day. Easy exercise can be resumed by the second week. Sex is usually limited based on the level of discomfort, although each person is different. Sports that have high impact like water-skiing should be avoided for first 6 weeks.

Your incision options

Incisions are made in inconspicuous areas to minimize visible scarring. Incisions vary based on the type of breast implant, degree of enlargement desired, your particular anatomy, and patient-surgeon preference. Dr. Ditesheim will discuss which incision options are appropriate for your desired outcome.

Incision options include:

  • Periareolar incision, around the nipple and areola
  • Inframmamary incision, in the crease underneath the breast
  • Transaxillary incision, in the armpit

Breast implant placement

After the incision is made, your breast implants are inserted into a pocket made in one of the following locations:

  • Under the pectoralis muscle (a submuscular placement)
  • Directly behind the breast tissue, over the pectoralis muscle (a submammary/ subglandular placement)
  • Partially underneath the muscle
  • Under the fascia

The method for inserting and positioning breast implants depends on the type of implant, your body type, and Dr. Ditesheim’s recommendations, as well as your preferences. If saline implants are used, they are filled with saline after the implants are placed in the correct location.

Am I a candidate?

If you’ve noticed a change in the size or shape of your breasts, especially after pregnancy or nursing, you may be a candidate for breast augmentation. Breasts can also lose fullness and volume over the years as part of the normal aging process. Some women pursue breast augmentation to improve asymmetry in their breasts. The best candidates for breast enlargement should be in good health physically and mentally, and should have realistic expectations about their likely results.

How Do I Know Which Breast Implant Size Is Best For Me?

Choosing the right breast implant size is one of the most important decisions you’ll make during your breast augmentation, and it’s one of the hardest decisions as well. During your consultation, Dr. Ditesheim will explain more about how to pick the perfect breast implants to meet your individual appearance goals taking into account your natural anatomy and existing breast measurements. You’ll also get to try on implants right in our office so you can see how different sizes, shapes and profiles will look on your body.

What's the difference between saline vs. silicone?

Dr. Ditesheim has performed hundreds of breast augmentations using both saline and silicone breast implants, either of which can deliver beautiful, natural-looking results in the right candidates. Together, you and Dr. Ditesheim will go over the details of each implant type in order to determine if there’s one that might better meet your goals for breast augmentation surgery.nnSaline implants are less expensive than silicone, and are FDA-approved for cosmetic use in women 18 and older. Since the implants are inserted empty and filled after placement, women who opt for saline implants typically have smaller scars. Filling after placement also allows for more precisely symmetrical results, particularly in women with significant asymmetry prior to surgery. Although saline implants can sometimes show visible surface rippling or wrinkles, they remain a cost-effective choice that can deliver beautiful results in the right candidate.nSilicone implants are FDA-approved for cosmetic use in women 22 and older, and are currently the more popular choice for breast augmentation among women in Charlotte. Filled with a thick silicone gel that has a jelly-like texture, silicone implants won’t wrinkle, and the contents are designed to stay in place even in the unlikely event of a breach in the outer implant shell.nGummy bear implants offer a third choice for women considering breast augmentation. Another type of silicone implant, the form-stable silicone gel in gummy bear implants is firm yet soft, much like the gummy candies they’re nicknamed after. Unlike saline or silicone gel implants, gummy bear implants have a teardrop shape that mimics the anatomical curves of the natural breast.nThere really isn’t one type of implant that’s considered “best,” only the implant that’s best for your body.

Will implants make my breasts less saggy?

Implants can restore volume to breasts that look deflated for a fuller look, but won’t actually change the placement of your breasts. For women with significant drooping in the breasts, nipples that point downward or an elongated breast shape, Dr. Ditesheim may recommend combining a breast lift with your augmentation. A breast lift raises and reshapes your natural breast tissue for a perkier look and firmer texture, while implants can increase your cup size.

How will my augmented breasts look and feel?

Between the superior quality of today’s breast implants and the advances in modern-day surgical technique, there’s never been a better time to enjoy breast augmentation results that look and feel more natural than ever before. Dr. Ditesheim is a skilled breast augmentation specialist who can help you feel more proportionately balanced, restore fullness to your figure following weight fluctuations or pregnancy and improve symmetry between breasts.

Will I have scars?

Any surgery leaves scars behind, and that includes breast augmentation. However, Dr. Ditesheim offers three options for discreet incision placement to ensure results look as scar-free as possible:nnA periareolar incision follows the curve of the nipple and areola, where it can be camouflaged by the darker pigmentation of the skin after healing.nAn inframammary incision is hidden in the natural crease under the breast, so your natural contours should provide excellent coverage.nThe transaxillary incision is placed in the armpit for breast augmentation that leaves the surface of the breast completely free of incisions.

How long until I can see my results?

You’ll notice a difference in your figure immediately after surgery, although some amount of post-operative swelling may disguise your final results at first. Most women can return to work within a week or less, with more vigorous activities following after a few more weeks. As recovery progresses and swelling dissipates, your implants should settle into their final placement by about 1 to 3 months after surgery.

What does breast augmentation in Charlotte cost?

Prices for breast augmentation depend on many factors. You’ll receive an exact fee quote at your consultation. Fees include breast implants, surgical care, the facility and anesthesia provided by an MD anesthesiologist. Financing is available, and we’ll go over your options at your personal consultation.
