Why go to extremes? Discover your own best options.

About This Comparison

Losing fat without surgery or downtime—that’s a no-brainer, right? But on the other hand, liposuction has been around for decades and remains one of the top 5 cosmetic surgery procedures—so clearly it’s the right choice for a lot of people. So, which is best for you?

Consider the Long-Term Costs vs. Benefits

Non-surgical fat reduction like CoolSculpting can be a great bargain for the right patient. If you just want to see your muffin top shrink or shed a little fat from your tummy, and you’re okay with results that come on gradually, CoolSculpting can be a cost-effective option. CoolSculpting is intended only to reduce the size of an unwanted bulge. As you can see in the patient on the left, the waist is slimmer and the lovehandle a little less pronounced.

But while a non-surgical procedure like CoolSculpting will indeed cost less initially, the results will not be as dramatic or immediate as what is possible with liposuction. Moreover, with AquaShape liposuction, Dr. Ditesheim can actually reshape the area, sculpting a natural contour with virtually undetectable scars. As you can see in our patient on the right, Dr. Ditesheim was able to remove the lovehandles and sculpt a smooth, aesthetically pleasing contour along the waistline.

Good Questions to Ask & Discuss with Your Surgeon:

  • How do I want to look, and which option will get me those results? Be specific & honest. Your surgeon is there to help you achieve your goals, and the more you can describe your desired result, the better.
  • How many treatments will I likely need to see my desired results? While some patients are happy with their results after 1 CoolSculpting treatment, others need 2 or more per area. Also, keep in mind that if you want to target fat on your hips or tummy, you will need a separate treatment per side, or a minimum of two treatments. In almost every case, liposuction achieves the final desired result in one treatment.
  • Where do I want to lose fat? Keep in mind that CoolSculpting cannot be used on the face or neck. Since the the fatty bulge must be pulled up into the applicator, smaller areas (such as the knees) usually cannot be treated. Liposuction is typically the best, if not the only, option to remove fat from these areas.
