Breast Lift Surgery Overview
A breast lift procedure restores a natural round breast shape by repositioning the nipple higher on the breast, reducing overstretched skin and removing breast tissue falling below the breast crease. In a traditional breast lift, the excess skin is removed from the lower part of the breast in order to conceal the scars as much as possible. A breast lift can add roundness to the top of your breasts, improve their shape, and reduce sagging to help bras fit more comfortably and clothing fit more attractively.
“I don’t feel like I need to hide my breasts anymore. I am more self-confident and proud of my body!”R.M. Charlotte, North Carolina
Will I need breast implants too?
This is really up to you. Are you happy with your current breast size and shape? If you are happy with your appearance when you are wearing a non-padded bra, a breast lift can improve the breast shape and make wearing that bra more comfortable.
If your breasts appear deflated or have lost significant breast volume after pregnancy or weight loss, then breast augmentation alone or a breast lift with augmentation may help you achieve the best results. Additionally, a breast lift with implants can be the best solution to correct noticeable asymmetry if you would like both breasts to be closer in size to your larger breasts.
Breast Lift vs. Breast Reduction
If you want smaller, lifted breasts, we can help you too. This type of mastopexy is essentially a breast reduction, except that the emphasis is more on skin tightening rather than on size reduction. This combination provides for a more proportionate appearance.

- Your nipples fall below the crease when you are not wearing a bra
- Your breasts are different sizes causing one to sag more than the other
- You are at a maintained, stable body weight
- You are a non-smoker or plan to quit smoking well in advance of the scheduled procedure

Breast Lift Surgery Details
Dr. Ditesheim specializes in the breast lift short scar technique, which incorporates two incisions: one around the areola and one vertically from the areola down to the breast crease. During the procedure, a “lollipop incision” is traced around the nipple and partially down the breast. The nipples are repositioned to give them a more youthful appearance consistent with the adjusted shape. Finally, excess breast skin is removed to make up for lost elasticity. Some of the incision scars will be concealed while others may be more visible. However, the lines do fade significantly over time.
Breast lift surgery usually lasts 2 to 4 hours, under general anesthesia administered by a physician anesthesiologist to minimize discomfort during the procedure. The procedure is done in the comfort of our private, AAAASF accredited surgical suite. Following your procedure, you will be able to go home to continue your recovery.
Dr. Ditesheim and his experienced staff will provide you with pre-surgical information that includes guidelines about drinking, smoking and avoiding certain vitamins and medications. Additionally, you may be required to have a mammogram exam before the procedure depending upon your age and medical history. Dr. Ditesheim’s veteran staff has a wealth of experience in preparing patients and families for the recovery process.
Breast Lift Surgery Recovery
Recovery from breast lift surgery is surprisingly quick for most of our patients. You may have some initial discomfort along the incision line, but the pain is usually mild. You’ll be encouraged to move your arms right away, and patients typically return to work within 1-3 days, depending on the extent of surgery. Dr. Ditesheim usually requests a breast lift patient to wait a few weeks before returning to more vigorous activities.
We want to make sure that your surgical experience and recovery is as pleasant as possible. Our experienced staff will provide you with postoperative guidelines and instructions for the most comfortable and successful healing.
